Sustainability at This Place

Nachhaltigkeit bei This Place

A look into our commitment to sustainability and how we shape our products and practices with intention and care.

For us, sustainability is woven into how we think, create, and care. Every choice we make, from ingredients to packaging, is part of a larger intention: to support your well-being holistically without losing sight of the planet we share.

We aim to make thoughtful decisions, even when they take more time. In the same way we approach self-care as a ritual, we see sustainability as a practice: ongoing, evolving, and rooted in respect.

Here’s a glimpse into how we’re putting that into action and where we’re still learning.

What Sustainability Means to Us

Sustainability has been part of our thinking since day one, a natural extension of how we approach everything we do.

We’ve always looked for the most thoughtful, holistic way to solve problems, and that includes how we design the ‘homes’ for our formulas, source ingredients, and shape our rituals.

We don’t see sustainability as a badge or a trend, but as a reflection of our values: to care deeply, choose consciously, and keep evolving with clarity and integrity.

Where It Starts: When Self-Care, Nature & Science Intertwine

Everything we create begins with one question: What kind of self-care do you actually need: in your body, your day, your life?

The answers are often simple. Something that works, that feels good, and that supports your well-being holistically without causing harm – to you or the planet.

That’s why we lean into natural ingredients backed by science, chosen not just for skin health, but for their wider benefits: soothing pain, easing tension, calming the nervous system.

Think: wild arnica, St. John’s wort, white willow bark. Plants that have stood the test of time because they work in ways we can feel.

For us, sustainability begins right here: in how we choose to care. Because ingredients that are kind to the body also keep us connected to the earth, to the wisdom of tradition and the clarity of science.

Why our Products Look the Way They Do

Have you ever wondered why our creams come in aluminium tubes? It’s not just for the look, they’re designed to be emptied to the very last drop. Aluminium is not only endlessly recyclable without losing quality, it’s also lightweight, durable, and protective, making it the ideal home for formulas that are meant to last.

The same intention shapes the rest of our packaging. We use high-quality glass bottles and jars to safely store our oils: a stable, long-lasting material that protects what's inside and reflects the shelf-life of our products: up to 30 months unopened, plus six more after opening.

Our folding boxes are made from Gmund Bio Cycle paper which contains up to 50% of hemp, a lower-impact material compared to conventional paper, with reduced resource use and emissions, plus it’s FSC® certified (FSC® C006462). Many of our boxes are glue-free by design. Even our labels are crafted from recyclable hemp paper.

Every element of our packaging is created with care. From the moment you open one of our folding boxes, the ritual begins. Each one is designed to unfold with intention, matching the products and revealing the practice that accompanies it.

Where Nature Meets Innovation: Why We Chose to Work With Hemp

We’ve chosen hemp-based paper for our folding boxes because it’s one of the most sustainable materials available today.

Hemp grows rapidly, reaching up to four meters in just 100 days, and can be harvested multiple times a year – unlike trees, which take years to mature.

A single hemp field produces up to five times more paper than the same-sized forest, while enriching the soil, requiring no pesticides, and absorbing significant amounts of CO₂.

It’s this blend of natural intelligence and low environmental impact that makes hemp such a powerful partner in our packaging.

Why We Produce In Germany

We chose to stay local. Being close to our production site and warehouse helps us stay in touch with the people behind the scenes, reduce unnecessary transport, and support small businesses and family-run operations that care about quality and ethics just as much as we do.

We believe in knowing where things come from. Who touches them. And why that matters.

Beyond the Products: What “Care” Means to Us

For us, sustainability is also about people. It’s about how we treat each other, how we support those who use our products, and how we choose the collaborators we create with.

We move with intention, respecting natural rhythms, real needs, and the value of doing things well rather than fast.

We advocate for a slower, more honest kind of self-care – one that challenges unrealistic beauty standards and reconnects us with what’s real: in our bodies, in nature, and in the communities we’re part of.

Whether it’s through thoughtful customer support or long-term partnerships, we’re building something that’s meant to last – rooted in integrity, not urgency.

Voices from Our Community

What touches us most is what you share with us. These words keep reminding us why we do what we do:

“The Glow is the only thing that calms my redness. I trust it completely.”
– Louisa

“I never thought I’d feel seen by a cream. But This Place gets it.”
– Emma

“The packaging felt like an invitation. Like someone had thought about how I’d receive it.”
– Jonah

“It’s part of my evening now. I sit down, breathe, and apply it. Like pressing pause.”
– Celina

Where We’re Headed Next

As we continue walking this path, our focus remains on refining what we’ve already built and reimagining what’s possible.

We’re exploring lighter, lower-impact packaging, including post-consumer recycled aluminum and biodegradable alternatives to plastic. We're also looking at ways to deepen our collaborations with artists and local makers whose values align with ours.

These steps are part of an ongoing conversation, one that keeps evolving as we learn, listen, and grow.

Staying Accountable: Inside and Out

One thing we’re learning as we grow: it’s not enough to just intend to do things well. We need ways to hold ourselves accountable, and invite others to do the same.

What matters is what we actually do and how we keep evolving. That’s why we regularly reflect on our decisions as a team, check in with each other, and look closely at every part of our process.

It always starts with transparency, from choosing recyclable materials like aluminium and glass to using hemp-based labels and FSC-certified folding boxes.

We collaborate with local manufacturers to reduce shipping distances, minimize packaging and weight. And while we’re not at the finish line, we keep asking the hard questions – and adjusting as we go.

For us, sustainability is part of every conversation we have, from lab to logistics to the words you’re reading now.
