Self care is anything but selfish

03.11.20 3 min. read

Self Care Isn’t Selfish

Have you experienced lying in bed feeling exhausted? That feeling when you have to drag yourself up and watch as time passes by? Don’t fret because you’re not alone. In this day and age, everyone seems to be in a hurry, ticking off their checklist only to see another page with more to-do lists. The world right now is full of demands and expectations that can quickly wear out anyone—almost a fight for survival.

Is it all there is? Of course not. No matter where you are right now in your career, relationship, finance, mental and physical state, you can always recover and start anew. There’s one common denominator in all of these. And that’s YOU. To do more and accomplish more, you have to first take care of yourself.

What is self care?

The term self-care is simple. It boils down to learning how to manage yourself and be in touch with what makes you happy and fulfilled. Often, these are things you usually take for granted because of the guilt that you don’t deserve such or that people might perceive you as self-centered or egotistical.

Self-care is all about mindfulness, it’s about having the conscious effort to acknowledge and take action on what makes you feel good and energized physically and mentally.

Why bother with self care?

Think of self-care like electronic gadgets. When used multiple times, it drains out the battery. Self-care is charging the battery to be at its peak performance. In this age, where you can quickly get swamped and lost in time, self-care teaches you to pause and take control back of your life.

Here are some of the benefits of self care:

  • Stops You From Ruminating

Let’s face it. The number 1 trigger for a bad day is caused by overthinking. You take in too much from other people that you don’t notice that there’s too much on your plate. Or, you often get swamped worrying about the things that haven’t happened yet.

Self-care is that pause button to just simply relax. When you relax, you let the tension all over your body melt away, clearing your mind of negative things and aligning yourself to what brings you joy.

  • It Connects Your Mind & Body

How you take care of yourself has a direct impact on both your mental and physical health. Self-care allows you to be mindful of what your body and brain needs. This, in turn, helps you address these needs and put your health first and foremost, among others. Prioritizing self-care gives you the reset button to start anew. Of course, it’s not a substitute for seeking professional help. Instead, it empowers you to take charge of your life so that you wouldn’t need the help of professionals.

  • Self-care isn’t selfish… not at all!

Some people think that self-care is a time-waster and selfish act. In truth, it’s the other way around. Whatever you feel internal is reflected in what you say and how you act. So, if you are at peace with yourself, you are calm in the midst of chaos. When you’re happy, people can see the sparkle in your eyes. And it creates a ripple effect that impacts all areas of your life, especially in your relationships.
